White Noise and Earplugs for Better Sleep

White Noise or Earplugs for Better Sleep

Preface

The recommended sleep duration for adult people is 7-8 hours every night. Sleep is crucial for health.

While you are sleeping, your body is going through some necessary maintenance, like recovery from injuries, restoration of nervous and immune systems, and processing memories in the brain.

You feel fresh, focused, and more energetic after getting enough sleep. You can expect faster muscle recovery after a workout if you sleep for 7+ hours every night.

Sleep deprivation adversely affects your cognitive skills, working memory, metabolism, and health. Lack of sleep has been linked with daytime mood swings and more frequent aggressive behavior leading to social problems, and a high risk of traffic collisions.

In one of my previous articles, I’ve discussed some tips for better sleep. In this article, one of those highly effective tips will be discussed in more detail.

Good sleep needs a quiet place. Loud noises are destructive for healthy sleep.

First, you’ll find falling asleep in a noisy place almost impossible as those unwanted sounds will keep you awake all the time even though you’re feeling sleepy.

Second, even if you manage to sleep when it gets quiet, just one ear-splitting noise of an ill-tempered child screaming in the street can wake you up no matter how deep your sleep was, thus ruining your entire night.

For many people, especially patients of insomnia and those who are going through some stressful life events, midnight awakenings bring more suffering, as it’s very difficult for them to fall asleep again.  The consequences are obvious, frustration and anger.

Noise pollution has significantly increased now-a-days. It is one of the most concerning problems in large densely populated cities. The primary sources of noise pollution in most cities in modern times are motor vehicles, construction sites, loud music, and people (e.g., loud neighbors).

Consequently, some places are noisier than others. It’s often not possible to move to a quiet place or neighborhood. So, in most cases, people have no option other than managing the situation on their own.

According to World Health Organization, currently, noise pollution is negatively affecting the sleep quality of 25%, or a quarter, of global population.

Fortunately, there are many simple ways to prevent those undesired noises from interfering with your sleep in any way. I have found these methods to be very useful for anybody facing this problem every night.

The simplest solution to this issue is keeping your windows closed while you’re sleeping at night. But in many cases, you can’t close them because of indoor heat or ventilation. Fresh outdoor air cleans and cools the indoor air, thus improving the quality of breathing and removing excess heat, which can be beneficial for good sleep.

If that’s the case, you are suggested to use soft earplugs or white noise or both depending on your personal choice and the severity of noise pollution in your surroundings.

Sleep Earplugs

Sleep earplugs are very similar to your earphones, except that the earbud portion is made of material like foam or silicone, which is soft, not injurious to the ear tissues, and can easily fit into the ear canal. Earplugs, if inserted properly, block moderate-intensity sounds, and can reduce the intensity of loud noise as well.

Earplugs are generally inexpensive and can be purchased online or from a pharmacy.

Silicone-Based Earplugs

Silicone-based earplugs come in many sizes, but many are simply designed for an average adult ear size.

You just insert the earbuds into your ears with a gentle push. If their size matches your ear canal, they will easily fit into the canal. Otherwise, they will come out or won’t enter the ears at all.

Unless you are sure about the right dimensions of your ear canal, start with the average ones. If the size is not suitable for your ears, you can purchase a different one having bigger or smaller dimensions depending on the need.

So, with silicone-based earplugs, you may struggle to find the right size for you.

Foam-Based Earplugs

On the other side, foam-based earplugs are adjustable.

These earplugs have a fixed size, but the material makes these earbuds contract when pinched and expand back to their original state after the pressure is removed.

Thus, you gently pinch the earbuds while inserting them into the ear canal. Pinching makes them get into the ears easily. After they are in your ears, they will expand and stay in your ears, as the ear opening is smaller than the earbud’s full size.

But don’t insert them completely. While wearing them, make sure that a little bit of the earbuds stays outside the ear opening, so that they can get out of the ears after you wake up in the morning.

Drawbacks of Earplugs for Sleep

The main disadvantage of earplugs is that you must clean and wash them regularly. Using contaminated earbuds or earbuds not washed regularly can cause infection in the ear.

Furthermore, earbuds hinder the natural removal of earwax from the ears, leading to hearing problems with too much use.

If not worn properly, earplugs can go deeper in the ear canal, making it difficult to get them out without medical assistance.

How to clean earplugs

  • To clean your earplugs, take some lukewarm water in a bowl.
  • Add a little bit of soap, but avoid harsh soaps which can damage the earplugs.
  • Put your plugs in the soapy water. Let them soak the water for a few minutes.
  • Then rinse them thoroughly. Make sure that no dirt or soap is left on them.
  • Squeeze the earplugs which are foam-based to release the soapy water from inside.
  • After you have properly washed your plugs, let them dry in a clean container or their own case.
  • Before wearing them, make sure they are completely dry, and your hands must also be clean to prevent any infection in the ear canal.

White Noise

You can get rid of unwanted noise with certain noises, like white noise.

White noise includes noise from electric appliances like fans, dryers, and vacuum cleaners, or natural phenomena, like steady rainfall. These noises are distinguished from other sounds by the same intensity of many frequencies. Also, these noises remain unchanged over time, which is what makes them so special.

White noise makes the surrounding noise, like the external noise, less noticeable or even unnoticed depending on the loudness of the white noise and that of the unwanted noises.

If there is a ceiling fan in your room and it’s summer, you have got a perfect white noise for you. But in other cases, you don’t need to keep any of those appliances running, as these consume too much electricity and overuse can lead to shorter operating life and higher maintenance cost.

Fortunately, there are dozens of free apps available for downloading in your mobile phone, which have many types of white noises saved, which can easily be played offline with a click for your desired duration without any burden on your mobile’s battery or your energy bill. Just type ‘white noise’ in the search box of Google Play.

White noise is effective for all types of people, including students, healthy adults, and even critically ill patients in the ICU, as shown by several academic studies on this topic.

How does white noise work

White noise works on the principle of auditory masking.

According to this rule, the detectability of a certain sound is directly related to the ratio of the level of that sound to the background noise level. Therefore, if the background noise level is increased, the detectability of that sound decreases. In other words, the background noise will mask that external sound if it’s dominant.

White noise is the background noise. It is meant to mitigate the effects of disruptive external sounds by masking.

Drawbacks of White Noise

The main disadvantage of white noise is increased electricity consumption.

Additionally, a sound that helps you sleep better might be a disruption for your partner or child.

How to Choose Between Earplugs and White Noise

Personally, I use both earplugs and white noise.

I mostly use white noise during daytime to block the outside noise, as I live in a very busy part of the city.

And I wear earplugs for sleep. Sometimes, I have to turn on some white noise, especially when very loud noises from the street can’t be efficiently blocked only with the earplugs.

But using earbuds for more than 8 hours a day is not recommended for health-related issues discussed above.

First Few Nights

First few nights with earplugs or white noise can be a bit hard, as it is your very first experience with them.

Initially, white noise may disrupt your sleep, and keep you awake for a large part of the night.

Earbuds may appear to be a burden on your ears, and may get loose and come out of the ears many times because of improper insertion by you as a beginner.

Once your body gets used to it after a few successful attempts, you will see how effective these are to keep you asleep in a noisy area.

Conclusion

White noise is better than earplugs for health. But you can use earplugs for 8 hours every night if you wash and clean them daily. For white noise, you can download an app in your smartphone. Sometimes, you need to combine both earplugs and white noise to block very strong external noises.
